Board of Governors
The general direction and administration of the Legal Aid and Justice Authority are vested in a Board of Governors, constituted in accordance with the Legal Aid and Justice Authority Act.
The primary objective of the Legal Aid and Justice Authority (LAJA) is to establish a robust framework for providing legal, financial, and other essential assistance to poor and vulnerable segments of society especially women and juvenile, specifically to ensure their access to justice in criminal matters. The Authority is managed by a Board of Governors responsible for the general direction and administration of its affairs. This Board is led by the Federal Minister for Law and Justice as the Chairperson and includes several high-ranking ex-officio members: the Attorney-General for Pakistan, the Secretaries of the Reform, Finance, and Law and Justice Divisions, and the Secretary of the Ministry of Human Rights. Legislative representation is provided by one member each from the Senate and the National Assembly, while provincial legal interests are represented by the Advocate General of each Province and the Islamabad Capital Territory. Additionally, the Board includes the Vice-Chairman of the Pakistan Bar Council, a prominent female social worker appointed by the Federal Government, and the Director-General of the Authority, who serves as the Member-cum-Secretary.
