LAJA provides legal aid and court representation to individuals charged with criminal offenses who cannot afford legal counsel.

- Applicant must be unable to afford legal assistance or representation
- Applicant must be charged with a criminal offense
- Applicant includes minors, lunatics, or persons of unsound mind
- Formal application submitted in the prescribed manner
- Affidavit sworn by the applicant along with required documents
- Formal application and affidavit are waived for minors or persons of unsound mind
- Assess financial eligibility
- Authority may conduct inquiries or investigations
- Preference given to disadvantaged women and children
- False information may result in revocation of assistance and recovery of funds
